MIES IN BARCELONA
Mies van der Rohe designed and built the German pavillion for the Barcelona international exhibition of 1929. Using glass, travertine and marble he created an icon of the Modern Movement in architecture. Hard to believe it was taken apart in 1930 and missing in action until 1980 when two architects were asked to reconstruct it on the original site. It was reopened in 1986. The pavillion is not a building with any function, but an exhibition of ideas. Looking at it from any angle, you realise how many modern buildings look a lot like this - a sign of how influential Mies and his peers were. Also inside is a replica of the famous Barcelona chair, designed by Mies for the exhibition.
Here are pics we took at the pavillion. Mouse over the thumbnails for a bigger view. See the official site for more.
